Representative: Shaun Corbett
In the wake of the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown, barber Shaun “Lucky” Corbett and detective Garry McFadden created Cops & Barbers INC to bridge the gap between the Police and the community they serve. Since the barbershop is a trusted cornerstone of the community, Cops & Barbers establishes meaningful connections making it easier to have the much needed dialogue necessary for a sense of hope, determination, and relationship building.
What is the focus of your organization?
The focus of Cops & Barbers is to bridge the divide between Police and the community they serve in an effort to build meaningful relationships.
How did your organization start?
We started Cops & Barbers right after the Mike Brown shooting. We knew that we had to do more because we strongly felt that if Brown and the officer had more of a relationship, Mike Brown and all the others would still be here today.
What is the issue you’re addressing?
The issue we’re addressing is the need for Police to have relationships within the community. We are also addressing the opportunity for youth in the community to be able to sustain themselves with a trade when traditional college is not an a viable option.
Where did your passion for this cause come from?
Wanting to do more and out of fear of maybe one day, this could be my son or even one of my client’s sons. Police shootings just kept touching too close to home.
Why is your work so important?
It provides a sense of hope, opportunity and much needed dialogue.
What are you most excited for as it relates to the SEED20 process?
The opportunity to be heard and to give the community that is normally voiceless a voice.
What have you already learned from this process?
I have learned that there are a lot of great organizations in the city of Charlotte doing great work in the community. I’ve also learned the art of pitching and that it is very hard work!
What do you hope to get out of SEED20?
Prize money, of course! Really, the opportunity to meet great people, to connect with great organizations and also the chance to continue to do great things for the people in my community.
