In an effort to reduce medical costs and increase the mental health and overall well-being of its guests, Mooresville Soup Kitchen will be offering Fresh Start. This is a free 12-week program that will provide weight loss and nutrition education, exercise training, and group support to individuals who are clinically overweight or obese who do not have the financial stability to access these resources otherwise.
How did you get started?
Mooresville Soup Kitchen has been feeding those in need since 1987. Throughout the years, as an organization, we had come to realize that it takes more than a meal to end hunger. Through research, we found that obesity is especially rampant amongst those with the lowest levels of education and the highest poverty rates. Fresh Start will be launched to help our guests lead healthier and more active lifestyles in a safe and supportive environment.
From where does your passion for this cause come?
I have worked closely with this population for years and it always breaks my heart to see individuals fall victim to this cycle. I see beautiful people who are vulnerable and struggling. They experience weight gain and develop physical and mental health conditions, which are directly related to the unhealthy choices that they were really given no choice but to make. They are important and deserve to have access to food and resources necessary to lead healthy and happy lifestyles.
Why is your work important?
“Obesity in the United States is a major health issue resulting in numerous diseases, such as cancer, coronary diseases, type 2 diabetes, mental health conditions, and stroke.” Obesity contributes to an increase in early mortality, as well as rising economic costs. This program will offer a solution to the pressing social issue of obesity amongst individuals in poverty who are also struggling with food insecurity.
What excites you most about the SEED20 process?
I am so excited to meet like-minded individuals who are also interested in tackling pressing social challenges. I can’t wait to hear all of the participants’ social ventures. I am also excited to work with the coaches and trainers and receive feedback on my program. I am grateful for this opportunity.
What do you hope to gain from the SEED20 experience?
I hope to become a part of a strong network team, as well as, learn how to effectively pitch my program to potential donors and investors. I am hoping this experience will give me the tools I need to make a true impact in the community.
