Transforming Youth Movement inspires social change and community transformation by connecting youth to positive people and experiences using their specific interest areas. The SHIFT Restitution and Community Service program connects court-involved and diverted youth to meaningful opportunities that enhance social skills, facilitate connections with positive adults in the community, promote civic engagement and help participants earn credit toward victim restitution.
How did this organization get started?
After a lifetime of dreaming and several years of planning, in 2016 TYM launched mentoring and community service programs in several counties across the Piedmont with funding through the NC Department of Public Safety and local Juvenile Crime Prevention Councils.
From where does your passion for this work come?
My passion for serving at-risk, or “at-opportunity” youth as I call them, stems from my own experiences coming up. I was one of them, and confronted and ultimately overcame many of the same obstacles facing young people today. I have experienced transformation in my life and witnessed it happen in the lives of the youth and families we serve.
Why is your work important?
Our work is important because we connect youth to pro-social activities and resources that broaden the possibilities for their lives. We guide them in developing tangible pathways toward achieving their dreams and help them understand that their contribution is vital to the success of our community.
What excites you most about the SEED20 process?
I am most excited for the opportunity to become a better leader in the nonprofit sector, share the good work happening through TYM and collaborate with other innovative, passionate people who are making a difference.
What do you hope to gain from the SEED20 experience?
I hope to grow personally and professionally through the SEED20 experience and help our agency secure the support and resources needed to do our part in changing the trajectory for youths who are most at-risk in our city.
